3 Myths About Pelvic Health During Pregnancy — Busted!
by Fiona from Pelvic Wellness
Pregnancy is a time of incredible change - physically, emotionally, and hormonally. With so much happening in your body, it’s no surprise that the pelvic floor is working overtime. Yet despite growing awareness, myths about pelvic health during pregnancy are still everywhere.
As a pelvic health physiotherapist, I see the impact of these misconceptions all the time. So let’s bust three of the most common pelvic floor myths to help you better understand and support your body throughout pregnancy and beyond.
Myth 1: “You don’t need pelvic floor exercises after a c-section.”
Many people assume that because a baby didn’t pass through the vaginal canal, the pelvic floor wasn’t affected. But here’s the truth:
Even with a planned c-section, your pelvic floor has been under constant pressure throughout pregnancy from your growing uterus, baby, and hormonal changes. This pressure can still lead to symptoms like leaking, painful sex, or constipation.
And if you had an emergency c-section after laboring or pushing, your pelvic floor may have experienced significant strain.
No matter how you gave birth, your pelvic floor deserves attention. A postnatal pelvic floor assessment can help you understand what’s happening in your body and how to support your recovery.
Myth 2: “Leaking during pregnancy is normal.”
Let’s get one thing straight: Leaking urine may be common during pregnancy—but it’s not normal. It’s a sign that your pelvic floor isn’t functioning optimally. That might mean it’s underactive (weakened), overactive (tight or tense), or simply not coordinating well with your core and diaphragm.
The good news? With the right guidance, pelvic floor function can be improved. Leaking is something we can work on, not just something you have to “put up with.”
Just because it’s happening to lots of people doesn’t mean you need to accept it as part of your pregnancy journey.
Myth 3: “You should only do pelvic floor exercises if you have problems.”
This is a big one! Many women wait until they’re experiencing pain, prolapse symptoms, or incontinence before seeking help—but early care is key.
Doing the right pelvic floor exercises during pregnancy can:
• Help prevent issues before they start
• Support your body through the physical demands of pregnancy
• Improve your connection to your core
• Support a smoother recovery after birth
Think of pelvic floor exercises like brushing your teeth - it’s all about maintenance and prevention. You don’t wait for a cavity to start brushing!
Your pelvic floor matters - at every stage (and age). Whether you’re pregnant for the first time or navigating a second (or third!) pregnancy, giving your pelvic floor some love can go a long way in supporting your comfort, confidence, and recovery.
If you're unsure where to start, a pelvic health physiotherapist can help guide you with tailored advice and exercises to suit your unique body and birth plan.
